One of the lesser appreciated functions of wearables is to give us a little nudge when we might have forgotten something. Often, that something is quite specific, like in the case of the Lumo Back, which is designed to give you a small vibration if you happen to let your posture slouch. Keep your back straight and your head up, that’s its goal.


The Lumo Back is a similar product to its younger brother, the Lift, designed to help keep you upright by giving you a gentle reminder when you slump. The Lumo Back however, straps around your waist with a handy elastic strap. This tracks your back and core with a suite of sensors, which can then detect what your posture is like throughout the day.

It can even track how long you’ve been sitting down for and what your quality of sleep is like.

If you find that the vibration reminder is a little strong, is set off at the wrong time or perhaps could do with giving you a bit more of a kick, then you can fine tune it through the back end application, which also collates all of the metrics it’s collecting, in order to give you a posture score. Ideally, you want it to be closer to 100, but a lot of people start out at the lower end of the scale.

The Back can also track basic fitness metrics, like steps taken.

The battery in the Back lasts seven days and can be charged from 0 to 100 per cent in just two hours. It contains 32MB of onboard flash memory, giving it enough space to store four weeks of posture data. If you want to compare more data over longer periods of time, you can use the cloud storage function.



The Lumo Back is currently available from Apple for £129.95.


Unfortunately for Android device owners, the Lumo Back is only compatible with iPhones and iPads. While an Android application will be arriving in the future, at this time the Back is limited to iOS users.

Bottom Line

The Back seems like a logical placement for a posture correction tool, offering a focus to lower back pain sufferers which may be more applicable. I do wonder how comfortable it is though to sit with it pressed against your back, especially if on a hard back chair.
